Voice features some of the finest names in African Jazz and the band plays their own brand of straight ahead jazz. Drawing heavily on many local influences the band have developed their own sound revolving around open microphone acoustic sound. The quartet quickly developed the reputation for traditional avant-garde jazz.
SYDNEY MNISI
Tenor Sax. Sydney Ace Mnisi was born in Edenvale - Tembisa. He began studying music at the mature age of 27 at Fuba continuing his studies at Pretoria Technikon. Sydney has recorded and toured extensively throughout South Africa and abroad performing with a host of South African musicians.
HERBIE TSOAELI
Bass. Herbie was born and grew up in Cape Town and began playing at the jazz workshop with professor Merton Barrow. He is one of the few bass players equally at home on the electric and acoustic instruments. His sensitivity as a player comes from years under the influence of many South African jazz greats.
ANDILE YENANA
Piano. Originally from King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape. He has a degree from the University of Natal. He is a remarkable player with a wide set of musical references to draw on. He has toured extensively both locally and abroad playing and performing with the likes of SAN (SA Norwegian project), Zim Ngqawana, Mahube and Winston Mankunku. Andile’s debut album, We Used to Dance, has received critical acclaim and he has been nominated for a SAMA Award this year.
MARCUS WYATT
Trumpet. Marcus Wyatt was born in 1971, and grew up in Port Elizabeth. He was first introduced to the trumpet at age eleven, and started playing in his school band where he received a solid grounding in reading and playing. He has a degree in Music from UCT College of music. He completed his degree, majoring in composition and arrangement. Marcus has recorded and performed with: Morris Goldberg, Marcus Wyatt Quartet, Winston Mankunku, Vusi Mahlasela, Jimmy Dludlu, Paul Hanmer, Sibongile Khumalo, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Carlo Mombelli. Marcus has two solo albums to his credit, The Gathering and Africans in Space, and has featured on many albums.
LULU GONTSANA: Drums on the first Voice album: Quintet Legacy
Lulu Gontsana Has been playing since the tender age of five. Lulu has been a constant feature on the South African jazz scene for almost three decades. Originally from the Eastern Cape, Lulu has played and performed with numerous local and international artists.
